Band of the month - May 2010

Our band of the month is Third Time Lucky.

Third Time Lucky is

Zack Wisehall - Guitar and vocals

Josh Barnett - Bass and vocals

Jon Jones - Drums and vocals

Formed in 2008, the three lads from Coalville in North West Leicestershire have been climbing the ladder, to become of the more popular young bands. They had one goal: To write a set of catchy pop songs, that everyone could enjoy and spill their hearts out onto the paper at the same time. They havn't put down their pen and paper since and have come up with some of the most memorable and appealing songs of any Leicestershire band.

In May 2009 and the band released their first recording, a collection of four pop-rock hits, titled 'Fourteen15Sixteen'. A series of listenable songs, the tracks celebrate youth and ooze its vitality and emotions.

Mixing the powerful beats created by Jon Jones (Drums) and Josh Barnett's (Bass) bass lines, with Wisehall's poppy guitar riffs, and topping it all off with outrageously catchy vocals, you get the soundtrack to the life of this teenage band.

For gig after gig, the young guys have wow'd audiences and delighted people of all ages. Their tunes sound like covers; even though they wrote all of themselves, the songs have that iconic quality of hit classics. Now that is real talent!

Artsin interviews the band:

Artsin: How long has your band been playing?

Third Time: Since August 2008 now, doesn't seem that long ago though!

Artsin: How did you meet? How did the band form?

Third Time: After the other band (Four on the Floor) split up, Zack and Jon met up and decided to make a band, just for fun. Then after searching for a bassist Josh got in touch and that's how we formed. We lost a guitarist and moved on and since then it's been nothing but up :)

Artsin: What was the first gig you played and how did it go?

Third Time: I think it was at a local pub. About 5 people turned up, and then after that we moved onto Leicester and played The Shed at a Saturday Matinee, still only about 5 people turned up but it carried on nicely from there :)

Artsin: Kind style of music do you play?

Third Time: We play pop rock. But we're starting to form our own distinctive sound. It's just harmless pop with an underlayer of dark deep meaning. We like it :)

Artsin: What are the main influences on your band? Which other bands do you like most?

Third Time Zack: I love a mixture of bands. Eminem, Counting Crows, N-dubz, Sum 41, McFly, and I guess all these bands kinda influence the sound we create, in their own way.

Josh: I love Fightstar and Mathcore!

Jon: Jamie T!

Artsin: Third Time Lucky have been playing in OBS heats? How did it go and what do you think of OBS?

Third Time: Yeah we got to the semi's, and then got knocked out but we hear it was so close between us and the other bands. Even Richard Haswell was blown away by us, and we'll take that as a compliment anyday :)

Artsin: Who in the band writes the songs? How do you do it?

Third Time Zack: That's me. I just get a catchy hook in my head and build on it. And it's always at the most inappropriate times. Sometimes i set out to write one and I just have to. It's the way I vent.

Artsin: Which comes first the lyrics or the melodies?

Third Time Zack: Usually the melodies, but sometimes I get an awesome lyric and put a melody to it. I tend to think of a melody being more important than the lyrics. I mean if you look at some stuff in the charts, you see that lyrics don't matter so much. But that doesn't mean my lyrics aren't deep, every lines personal.

Artsin: What do you think of the live music scene in Leicester?

Third Time: We think it's starting to grow, it's getting alot better. The quality of the bands is VERY high now.

Artsin: Which is your favorite Leicester venue?

Third Time: Probably The Musician to play at, the sounds great and the atmosphere with a big crowd is brilliant :)

Artsin: Tell us about bands and live music in Coalville?

Third Time: Coalville can hold it's own weight against the other towns and cities. Coach trips to Leicester to see the bands play have become very popular, we've been pulling in 50+ crowds and the other bands have been doing it too. Although Coalville has the worst reputation ever, it seems to be turning out some pretty good bands, with a good sense of what the audience wants. its worth the night out.

Artsin: Do you ever perform covers?

Third Time: yes a couple such as, bonkers by Dizzee rascal, kill the director by the wombats which is fairly common and also the crowds favourite about you now by the sugarbabes, but we tend to stick with our own material.

Artsin: What plans has the band got for the year ahead?

Third Time: we have recently joined up with a production company and we are spending around three months recording our debut album which will be called 'the upside to losing everything' and we will see where that goes from there. We are going to see where that takes us. Then we are going to carry on gigging our arses off and organise our own nights in leicester. We are also playing Glastonbudget at the end of this month. This year is a busy year for the band!

Artsin: Which other bands have you supported?

Third Time: As of yet we havent supported any bands, we have played along side 'The Stiggz', 'Beauty Killed The Beast', 'Identity Parade', 'Panda Youth', 'Forgotten Sun', 'Azidify' and loads of other leicester bands over the years, Soon we shall be headlining a gig with 'Neon Sarcastic' 'Kicking Habits' and 'Ictus'.

Artsin: Have you been on radio, either having tracks played, or done an interview?

Third Time: We have had our tracks played on Birmingham student radio and currently looking into getting BBC radio air time.

Artsin: Have you ever thought of dressing up for gigs to give yourselves an image?

Third Time: We have a band uniform, It's Fred Perry shirts, Cardigans, Black skinnys and pumps. We have started to realise that image is very important when it comes to the band, and we think we have finally found one that represents our sound, because bikinis didnt really work out for us haha.

Artsin: What do you think of Kasabian?

Third Time: Kasabian are a inspirational band that many people look up to from the local scene, its great to hear a success story like that come from Leicester.
