Exhibit A - Leicester College end
of course show
Exhibit A is the end of course show for the 23 students graduating
from the Foundation Degree in Photography and Video at Leicester College.
Throughout this two-year Higher Education course, which is
validated by De Montfort University, the students have undertaken professional
and academic training in many areas of still and moving image production and
this exhibition is the culmination of three months self-directed study at the
end of this course.
The exhibition is an opportunity for the students to express
their own interests and creativity. On show is thought-provoking work of various
styles, techniques, concepts and thematic concerns.
The exhibition runs from Tuesday 29th May until Saturday
9th June 2012 at Fabrika IAC, 68-70 Humberstone Gate, Leicester, LE1 3PL between
the hours of 10.00am until 6.00pm.

Artisan, Fabrkia, 25th to 28th April
An exhibition showcasing the work of second year BA (Hons)
Design Crafts students from DeMontfort University was on show at Fabrika in
Humberstone Gate, from 25th April to 28th April. ArtsIn went there today to see
a selection of some of the works on display.
Glasswork by Emily Anne Stevens. Emily had created delicate,
coloured glass pieces that crate movement and excitement translated into glass.
She said in her statement 'I want the glass to have the same effect on others
as the music does on me.'
Amy Larkin's Animated Star Garden Book is a combination of
hand cut images and recycled hand made paper. It illustrates a multi-plane journey
through a garden, with ferns unfurling and plants pulling apart as we track in
and reveal a pathway to a secret locked door. In her statement, Amy said 'My
inspiration comes from the animated works of German silhouette animator and film
director, Lotte Reiniger and the intricate detail of Japanese paper cuts.
The simple process of repetition fascinates Surbi Juneja,
who uses a wide range of materials including paper, fabric and wood to create
decorative 3D pieces,
Steffnie Percival loves the process of spinning vessels by
taking a flat sheet of metal and form it into a axially symmetrical shape that
has a smooth surface.
Growing up in the Brecon Beacons gave Elen Thorne a love
of everything to do with the outdoors and nature. Currently working with metal
she uses a combination of hand raising and forming to create vessels inspired
by natural forms. she works the metal by adding textures to create interesting
surfaces. she uses metal and paper, juxtaposing the gentle subtlety of the paper
with the rigidity of the meta.
Emily Jane Penrose's current work is based on media and gossip
magazines. which she uses to 'manipulate' words and to explore stories.
Ruth Dale works with clay and is inspired by colour, pattern
and form.
Mould making and slip casting are two processes and techniques
enjoyed by Sarah Warburton in her work with ceramics. She got her inspiration
from this piece from the natural form of pebbles and their colours has allowed
her to experiment with glazes
This remarkable piece stood on a light box. Created by Phoebe
Shackleton-Trevor who uses Italian glass and a torch to make lamps.
Faye Williams specialises in glass and metal, combing the
two materials, using shapes from natural resources. Colour is added to the enamelling
process.
Jessica Streets designs printed textiles, creating scarves
inspired by 1950s block prints with simple outlines of shapes and objects. He
main focus within textiles is lino printing; she loves the texture it gives.
Vessels made by Claire Danielle Sherriff. The holes signify
the removal of fear.
Metal worker Imogen Milsom produces one off pieces of jewellery
and wall art. The main process she uses is hand piercing metal. She works with
copper and silver.

Art for change - reflects
We report on the launch night of the Art
for Change exhibition held in the Malcolm Arcade.

Iain Jaques' black and white images celebrate modernism
and
flyover futurism beyond car culture
Flyovers - the first in a series of 'Postpeakcartastic' photographic
series by Iain
Jaques is currently exhibiting at Leicester People's Photographic Gallery until
16th
April 2012. The Leicester People's Photographic Gallery is in Belvior Street
in the building that used to be the central lending library.
Flyovers
The Flyovers project began in 2009; the year the M1 marked
50 years since opening
to an idyllic age of motoring. The images explore, rediscover and expose overlooked
places and spaces. A testament to the vision and engineering skill that built
them.
Spaces often flown past, missed or glanced. Places and structures designed and
engineered to hold up the dream of mobility, access and speed for all.
Motorways
Closing more than half a century of frenetic, heroic, and
sometimes misguided
motorway building is the M74 Completion project, which opened to traffic in June
2011. Photographed under construction the most expensive stretch in UK motorway
history is still built true to the finest modernist planning principles, finally
completing a
1960s vision of encircling central Glasgow with urban motorways.
Peak Car
With 'Peak-Car' upon us the highway is a relic of
the 20th century that surrounds us
like shipyards, canals, railways, steelworks and coalmines of past glories and
a
bygone era. A memory still being discovered. Created even as it is buried. Leaving
us with questions; What now for car culture? What do we do with remnants of
monolithic concrete and deserted utilitarian roadscapes? Where next for the
modernist vision? How do we recycle and reuse the road space to build 21st century
cities 'Fit for People'?

The Exhibition
runs through to 25th February. Thereafter the pictures will tour round various
Leicester venues for the rest of this year.
Speaking at the launch event, artsIn Director Trevor Locke
said "We were pleased that 147 photos were submitted to the online collection.
The standard of photography was really high. There were some cracking shots amongst
them. The selection panel had a challenging job to pick 20 out of these.
"The 20 photos that we can see now in the gallery are a good
cross section of the live music scene of Leicester. Together they portray the
imagery of what live music is like."
The photographs were all taken by local photographers and
show the variety of live music in Leicester. Twenty pictures will be on display,
selected by a panel of judges for both their photographic quality and to reflect
the wealth of imagery associated with the live music scene.
