Gig reviews for March 2011

Detroit Social Club at the Soundhouse, 2nd March

As reported by Paul Mitchell

For those that are into music as much as train spotters are to trains, then you will know having seen the 'Traps' perform, that front man Jamie Williams strikes a gate indeed similar to the mannerisms & playing style of Courteeners front-man Liam Fray with the look and maturity of Liam Gallagher. Thankfully, without the attitude & upset of either! Jamie deserves to be that 'Rock n Roll Star'.

As any knowledgeable Indie loving music fan would agree, the feel of Oasis Kasabian, The Rifles & The Jam are apparent, even some tone of the 'Undertones'! Yet the Boobytraps bring their own style and sound to the party with simple guitar, coupled with lyrics who are like old easy going friends - very catchy hooks.

The 'Traps who are Jamie Williams (Lead vocal & guitar), Scott Laywood (Lead guitar & vocals), Seb Kedziora (Drums) & Lewis Barrett (Bass) belted out a set that included 'Tell me now', 'Take my heart', 'Believe', 'Don't ever let go' and finished with the smash 'Don't even matter'.

I managed to have a few words with the 'Traps after the show and the lads told me that there are some 'big things afoot'. Some studio time to lay down new material, the re-launch & re-working of some existing songs which will all be available for digital download really soon. In addition, more shows across the Midlands which will hopefully include some festival slots. Keep an eye on these fellas as they raise the bar to the next level.

If you missed the gig, The Boobytraps will be playing The Shed, Yeoman Street Leicester on Sat 5th March. Demon FM are coming down especially, so if it's good enough for them then it should be good enough for you! The Traps will also be playing a headline slot at this years Glastonbudget Festival over the Bank Holiday weekend 27th - 29th May at Turnpost farm Wymeswold. Don't miss them!

Hot on the heels of the Boobytraps were the Detroit Social Club who are on the seventh night of their current 'intimate venue' UK tour.

Detroit Social Club played a 'mint' set at the Soundhouse on Wednesday night. The last time I spoke to front-man Dave Burn was last year when DSC supported King Monkey - Ian Brown at Rock City, Nottingham. Dave was then asking for details of smaller intimate venues across the Midlands and that's exactly what he got last night, as they played the seventh gig of their current UK tour.

I've seen DSC now several times across huge, large and small stages. It doesn't matter if it's main stage at the Isle of Wight festival or Leicester's Soundhouse, Mr. Burn puts in an emotional feeling and intense performance. Infectious and instantly loveable - 'Northern Man' that he is. He is at one with himself, the crowd and his music. Standing there you become almost as part of the band as he wants you to be.

The set moved through songs including 'Silver', 'Kiss the Sun', 'Black and White', 'Prophecy', 'Forever' (my personal favourite), 'Northern Man' and closing with the new single 'Revolution'.

You can hear the Oasis & Verve influence through the bands delivery coupled with such an honest and sincere undertone. Some simple guitar riffs reminding me of 80's Big Country, and if you closed your eyes, listened carefully you could even be right back with Hendrix.

DSC aren't about the fame, the money, the deals, nor the removal of one's artistic licence by a label. They are without doubt, about making music, being creative in their own right and own way. They refuse to be packaged, labelled, shipped, stacked and sold and never sold out or down river.

As for future plans, Mr. Burn and the band told me they plan to take it easy this summer after last year's relentless touring and festival appearances at V, IOW and Glastonbury, to name but a few. The autumn may well see new music, new sounds and new projects. That's the excitement and interest of Detroit Social Club. I won't allow my membership to lapse!

For those who missed the gig, DSC will be playing Nottingham's Bodega Club Thurs 24th March.
